May 1, 2012 Dear Parents, Did you hear about the Arbor Day Celebration last Friday? The next time you are at Rowe with your child, be sure to check out the eleven October Red Maples planted along the Rowe/InterMed property lines. Each tree has a beautiful tag inscribed with the teacher’s name and date. We are grateful to Scott Canfield from Nest-Egg LLC, Steve Palmer from Plainview Farms, and Sarah Witte from DeWan and Associates, who planned the ceremony, provided the hard hats and certificates, and made the Rowe School community feel very special. I hope the children will remember this day well into their adulthood. Next week is Kindergarten Screening. Teachers and staff will be busy meeting the incoming Rowe students and parents. Though it is exciting to meet incoming parents and children, it is bittersweet to think of saying good bye to our first graders; we will greatly miss them. The bodies, minds, and social behavior of children at this age change so dramatically over the course of the year. They are beginning to look much more like second graders. Our placement process of assigning our current kindergarten and Grade 1 children to classrooms for next year is almost complete. Placement is a lengthy process considering many factors and involving input from the professionals in our school who know the children. We do not honor specific placement requests. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Teachers review the placement lists several times before final decisions are made. Classroom placements are announced in mid-June. With summer right around the corner, parents are asking about ways to support learning throughout the summer months. Book lists of suggested summer reading will be sent home in June. Boys and reading make headlines quite often. Boys are drawn to adventure, “ultimate fighters,” and off-beat humor. A web site, guysread.com, offers useful lists of books to coax boys into reading. There is also a link to this site on Beth Costello’s web page. On May 25, the first graders will join Town Arborist Deb Hopkins in planting two apple trees in our garden enclosed by the stone wall. This event will take place rain or shine. More information will be forthcoming. Mark your calendars. Our annual Ice Cream Social, Book Fair, Basket Raffle, and Art Show will occur on June 6 from 6:00-7:30 P.M. The Ice Cream Social and Basket Raffle are sponsored by the P.T.O. All proceeds go toward future enrichment activities such as visits by authors, field trips, or other education programs at our school. The Book Fair is organized by our librarian, Beth Costello. Books are provided by Royal River Books. Proceeds will benefit our library. Staff and volunteers from our school will be on hand to assist with book selection. The Art Show features our children’s masterpieces created during art class with Emily Landry. Budget update: The Town Meeting will take place on June 5 at 7 PM at the Harrison Middle School gym. If the budget passes at the Town Meeting, it is still necessart to go to a referendum vote on June 12 at the AMVETS Hall. The following are important dates and upcoming events to note.
