March Newsletter

March 3, 2021

Dear Rowe Families,

We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing winter break. In this year like no other, time with our immediate families has become more precious than ever. I think we are all looking forward to having these trying times behind us, but I hope that you have been able to find at least some small silver linings for you and your family in all of this. Please continue to reach out if there is anything you need from us.

Read Across Rowe

The week of March 22nd-26th we will have a “Read Across Rowe” week. Guest authors, one being our very own PE teacher Mr. Lipman, will live stream into classes at lunchtime to read a story to the students. That same week, we will have school spirit days where we will all do something collectively as a school such as wear pajamas, wear mismatched clothes, etc. We will be sending out more information about this after our Building Leadership Team meets to finalize all of the plans.

Assessment

Your child recently took a summative assessment known as the NWEA. It is one measure of many that we use to measure student progress and growth. It is given to students K-8 in the Yarmouth schools. At the K-4 level, it is taken on the iPad with headphones. It is a newer assessment to us for K/1 but has been given in the upper grades for a number of years. As with any assessment, it is a snapshot of learning on one particular day and does not provide the full picture of a child’s abilities. The parent reports with the assessment results will be mailed home in mid-March, including a letter from me explaining a bit more about the assessment.

Staying warm

Please send your children with extra layers to wear in the classroom. We keep windows open to provide additional ventilation and want to be sure everyone stays comfortable. Thanks in advance for your help!

Kindness in Action Project

We sent a paper flyer home recently but I wanted to include it in this letter to be sure everyone has the information. The Yarmouth K-8 PTO is partnering with the nonprofit organization, Maine Needs, to help fellow Mainers who are struggling to meet their basic living needs. To spread kindness to these individuals and their families, we are asking Rowe families to consider participating in one of five suggested ways. Please read the attached information for the details. The collection week for items is the week of March 8-12.

Gratitude

Our Food Drive in February was a huge success! We collected over 300 much-needed items for the Yarmouth Food Pantry. As always, we are amazed at the extent to which our families support the needs of the community! Thank you for your generosity.

Day of Hope- March 13, 2021

 Hello, Yarmouth Parents and Students!

The Day of Hope, an event that highlights the positive work of people in our community, will be virtual this year on Saturday, March 13th. Our three main speakers are Anna Siegel, Mo Nuñez, and Richard Cantz. Please visit www.dayofhopemaine.com to learn more about how to donate and receive a link to the pre-recorded virtual event. All of the proceeds from the event will go to Maine Youth for Climate Justice (MYCJ). On the website, you will also find more information about speakers, additional videos about hope from the YHS community, and information about our student organizers: Jack Vigue, Izabel Cox-Faxon, Amelia Kostin, and Laney McDonough. We appreciate your endless support in continuing this incredibly important event for our community. We hope you will join us in learning about the awesome work members of our community are doing to spread hope. If you would like more updates on the event, check out our website, and social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook.
