June Newsletter

June 5, 2018

Dear Rowe Families,

Although the end of school for 2017-2018 is fast approaching, we still have a number of exciting events coming up! All of the Rowe students will attend a Cat in the Hat production at the YPAC on June 5th. The show will be performed by the YHS Acting Class.

Our Annual K-4 Book Fair and Ice Cream Social happens on Wednesday, June 6th from 6-7:30 pm. Kindergarten students entering in the fall and their families are invited to come in a bit earlier at 5:30 before the larger crowd arrives. This will be my first ice cream social and I am told it is an extremely fun and well attended event. I am really looking forward to it! We have a number of staff and parents who have signed up to help. Thanks in advance for your support and we hope to see you there.

On Friday, June 8th, we will have our school-wide trip to Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth, the culminating event for our ocean unit. A number of volunteers have signed up to go, but a few classes still need help. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are able to chaperone this wonderful trip. This is designed not to be a typical day at the beach, but instead is a learning experience with organized activities lead by Rowe staff members. The more helping hands we have the better. NOTE: Please be sure your child does not wear flip flops. We will be climbing on rocks and they need footwear that will not slip off their feet. Thank you!

Carol Steingart, a consultant who comes to Rowe each year to provide a rich, hands-on experience with sea life for the children as part of our school-wide ocean unit was here recently. Kindergarten students experienced an intertidal buffet in which they learned about a variety of sea and plant life. Last week, first graders learned about horseshoe crabs with Carol and her colleague. Please ask your children about these experiences if they haven’t already shared them with you.

Message from the Rowe Library

Our librarian Ms. Olson, would like for books to be returned to school before Friday, June 8th. If she is not in the library, the books can be deposited in the book drop at her desk. Thanks in advance for the help!

Yarmouth Elementary School tour

The current first graders moving on to YES next year will take a tour of their new school on Wednesday, June 6th. It will give students an opportunity to see their new school, learn a bit about where various rooms are located, meet some of the staff, and check out the playground. They will be spending approximately 30 minutes there for this first visit.

Step Up Day

On Monday, June 18th, rising second graders will go to YES in the morning to meet their new teachers. On this visit, they will report directly to their new classrooms. They will spend about 30 minutes doing an activity with next year’s teacher and classmates. Later that day, current kindergarten students at Rowe who will be moving up to first grade will meet their new teachers in the afternoon. All children will be bringing home their progress reports that day as well. The new teacher’s name will be listed on the report. Note: Families of new kindergarten students who will be attending Rowe in the fall will receive a letter in the mail in late June to notify them of their child's teacher. Please contact me if you have questions.

Message from HMS regarding a community event this Saturday, June 9th

Tracy Weinrich and Merry Stuhr are organizing a school-sanctioned (non-political) Yarmouth March for the Ocean (YM4O) on June 9th!  The March will take place on Cousins Island (from Sandy Point Beach, walking on the sidewalk to Madeleine Point) to CELEBRATE and EDUCATE people about our one precious ocean.  In addition to the March, this family-friendly event will feature a few beach activities focused on plastics, some ocean experts, a beach clean-up (bring work gloves, if you have them), face painting and more.  BLUE is the color of the day! You might also consider creating an ocean-themed costume (contest!), a small float (that is on a pulled wagon), or some other type of display that conveys a message about caring for our ocean.

Please see our web site for details, guidelines and the RSVP form.  (We strongly encourage registering ahead of time so that we can keep the Yarmouth Police Department informed of the group size and have enough snacks at the end of the March.)

 Best,

Tracy Weinrich and Merry Stuhr

New backpacks for students in need

We are fortunate to once again be able to offer backpacks with school supplies to families who are in need of some assistance.  The Community Backpack Program was started in 2017 and is being offered again this year at YES and Rowe and has now been expanded to the middle school.  Backpacks will be available for pick up at the schools prior to the start of the school year. Please contact a guidance counselor or the principal's office at your child's school if you would like to receive a backpack. PLEASE NOTE: If you are able to contribute, you may make monetary donations in any amount, payable by check to: Yarmouth High School, Community Backpack Program. Watch for notices of places to donate supplies in August. Please try to get back to us as quickly as possible, preferably before school ends.

Thank you so much!

Yarmouth High School students, Hannah Dwyer and Avery May

The deadline to place your order is Friday, June 8. Deliveries will be made the following week.
