April Newsletter

Dear Rowe School Families,

Where did the month of March go? It was a very busy month at Rowe School. We had a snow day on the last day of winter…how fitting!  The arrival of spring also brought a new baby to the Rowe School family. Amber Gross gave birth to Charlotte Ryan in the wee hours of March 21.  Congratulations to Amber, Ryan, and big brother Jameson!  Melissa Spence is our long term substitute. She began on Monday, March 24. When she is not working at Rowe School, she is a guidance counselor at the Falwell School in Auburn. We are fortunate to have Melissa with us until Amber’s return in late May.

The PTO funded a fabulous enrichment program on March 22. Maine author Matt Tavares spent the day sharing his art and craft of writing.  He gets many of his ideas from his love of baseball.

April promises to be just as busy as March. On Tuesday, April 2, the first grade students will perform The Rowe Show at YPAC at 6:30 PM. On Wednesday, April 3, I will welcome the parents of children who will enter kindergarten in the fall. It is hard to believe it is already April and we are thinking of our next school year. Time is really flying.

In March we began the process of assigning our current kindergarten and Grade 1 children to classrooms for next year. Placement is a lengthy process considering many factors and involving input from the professionals in our school who know the children. An extraordinary amount of time, care, and thought is devoted to this process as it is essential that balanced groupings be created to provide equal opportunities for all students. We, therefore, do not honor specific placement requests. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Classroom placements are announced in mid-June.  Please contact me if you have any questions about how placement is done in our school.

Professional Learning

On March 15, while students had a day off from school, the Rowe staff spent an engaging and exciting day learning more about Effective Responsive Classroom Practices with Andy Dousis.  It was a wonderful day of learning.

A Few Reminders

Playground coverage in the morning begins at 8:05 AM. Please do not drop your child off prior to that time.

Dismissal is at 3:10. Children are involved in academics until 3:00.  Please try to avoid picking your child up prior to 3:00 so as not to disrupt the academic day.

Please check our Lost and Found in the gym.  The cubbies will be cleared of all clothing and donated prior to April vacation.  Thank you.

Farewell to Friends

Rowe School is saying farewell to two of our friends and colleagues.

April 5 will be the last day at Rowe for Ed Tech. Cecile Slater. She will be moving to South Carolina over our April vacation to join her husband, who has been working there since October. Mrs. Ally Olson will be joining us on April 8 as an Ed Tech.

April 11 will be the last day at Rowe for Beth Costello, our librarian.  Mrs. Christine Van Alstine will join us after April vacation to be our librarian.

It is with heavy hearts that we say good-bye to Beth and Cecile. We wish them all the best in their new endeavors.

We welcome Ally and Christine with open arms to our Rowe School community.
