May 10, 2013
May has been, and will continue to be, a busy month!
On May 2, we celebrated A.C.E.S. Day. Mr. Lipman, Mrs. Gooch, and Mrs. Saxe planned an AWESOME Community Meeting for All Children Exercising Simultaneously. It was informative and entertaining. Can you imagine the entire school simultaneously dancing to the Harlem Shake????? We did!
This week was Kindergarten Screening. Teachers and staff were busy meeting the incoming Rowe students and parents. Though it is exciting to meet incoming parents and children, it is bittersweet to think of saying good-bye to our first graders; we will greatly miss them. The bodies, minds, and social behavior of children at this age change so dramatically over the course of the year. They are beginning to look much more like second graders.
This week was also Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you for providing a beautiful luncheon for us on Thursday and a delicious breakfast this morning. We appreciate you and the tremendous support you give to Rowe School throughout the year.
Our placement process of assigning our current kindergarten and Grade 1 children to classrooms for next year is almost complete. Placement is a lengthy process considering many factors and involving input from the professionals in our school who know the children. We do not honor specific placement requests. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Teachers review the placement lists several times before final decisions are made. Classroom placements are announced in mid-June.
Mark your calendars:
On May 17, the kindergarten students will join Town Arborist Deb Hopkins in planting two elm trees in the Royal River Park. This event will take place rain or shine. In addition to planting trees, the children will learn how to identify different trees and invasive pests. They will also visit the Yarmouth History Center to see what Main Street used to look like when it was lined with elm trees. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for walking to the Royal River Park and planting trees.
On May 21, Ron Barker, Interim Superintendent and Mike Morrill, Yarmouth Police Chief, will host a school safety forum at 7:00 PM in the YHS Flex Room. Mr. Barker and school administrators will provide updates on the progress made regarding school safety and security matters and talk about what safety measures will be implemented in the ensuing months. All community members are cordially invited to attend this forum.
On June 5, our annual Ice Cream Social, Book Fair, Basket Raffle, and Art Show will occur from 6:00-7:30 P.M. The Ice Cream Social and Basket Raffle are sponsored by the P.T.O. All proceeds go toward future enrichment activities such as visits by authors, field trips, or other education programs at our school. The Book Fair is organized by our librarian, Christine Van Alstine. Books are provided by Royal River Books. Proceeds will benefit our library. Staff and volunteers from our school will be on hand to assist with book selection. The Art Show features our children’s masterpieces created during art class with Emily Landry.
