May Newsletter

Dear Families,

May promises to be another busy month!

Spring Weather

We continue to wait for warm weather to arrive. It is sad to still be wearing winter coats in May.  At some point the weather will change and we will make the switch from snow gear to sandals!  For safety, I recommend footwear that is secure on the feet. Closed toe shoes or sandals with backs are much safer for running on the playground than flip flops. This is particularly important for playing on our natural scape playground.

Kindergarten Screening

Last week was Kindergarten Screening.  Teachers and staff were busy meeting the incoming Rowe students and parents. Though it is exciting to meet incoming parents and children, it is bittersweet to think of saying good-bye to our first graders; we will greatly miss them. The bodies, minds, and social behavior of children at this age change so dramatically over the course of the year.  They are beginning to look much more like second graders.

School Budget

1.  Citizens are invited to attend the Town Meeting on Tuesday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Harrison Middle School to vote on each of the articles of the budget.

2.  Voters are then provided the opportunity to cast a ballot in a town-wide referendum to approve the budget as set by the Town Meeting. The referendum will be held on June 13, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Robert W. Boyd AmVets Hall.

Please refer to the district website for more budget information.  We hope to see you on June 6!

Our placement process of assigning our current kindergarten and Grade 1 children to classrooms for next year is almost complete.  Placement is a lengthy process considering many factors and involving input from the professionals in our school who know the children so well. We do not honor specific placement requests. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.  Teachers review the placement lists several times before final decisions are made.  Classroom placements are announced in late June.

Mark your calendars:

On May 19, the kindergarten students will celebrate Yarmouth Arbor Day at the Royal River Park. This event will take place rain or shine. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for walking outside.

May 31 is a Hannaford card reload day.  Be sure to get your check to the Rowe office by noon on Wednesday.  If you are not already a Hannaford gift card owner, I encourage you to consider purchasing a card.  This is a wonderful PTO fundraiser. For every $100-$500 you put on a gift card, Hannaford donates 5% to the K-4 PTO for enrichment activities for our students.

On June 7, our annual Ice Cream Social, Book Fair, Basket Raffle, and Art Show will occur from 6:00-7:30 P.M.  The Ice Cream Social and Basket Raffle are sponsored by the P.T.O. All proceeds go toward future enrichment activities such as visits by authors, field trips, or other education programs at our school. Our librarian, Allyson Olson, organizes the Book Fair. Books are provided by Royal River Books.  Proceeds will benefit our library.  Staff and volunteers from our school will be on hand to assist with book selection. The Art Show features our children’s masterpieces created during art class with Emily Landry.
