January

January 4, 2023

Dear Rowe Families,

Happy 2023! We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing break. It is hard to believe it is already January. I have included some information about our Pre-K program for fall of 2023 later in this message. Please spread the word to neighbors and friends who live in Yarmouth.

Inclement Weather

Delayed start: There may be times when we have a delayed start to school due to unsafe driving conditions. This is a two-hour delay, so buses will pick students up two hours later than their usual time. Children who are being dropped off can begin arriving at school at 10:25, two hours later than the usual 8:25 time.

***Please note that there will be no morning Pre-K on days when we have a delayed start. Afternoon Pre-K students will be picked up and dropped off at their regular times.

We have one more inclement weather day that will be considered a typical day off or snow day and will be added to the end of the school year. After that, we will begin having remote snow days. Your child’s teacher will be in touch with more of these details when this happens. iPads will be sent home with kindergarten and first-grade students the day before any possible storms in order to complete any remote work assigned. Pre-K students will not bring devices home and their teachers will send home an alternate plan for them due to the half-day programming and age of the students.

Safety Exercise

The Safety Exercise that we will be doing with students has been changed from January 9th to Monday, January 23rd. This is due in part to a scheduling conflict. I explained this exercise in my last letter and have included the information again for your review below:

On January 23rd, teachers will begin introducing to students how we follow teacher directions when we have an unexpected event. To be clear, at the elementary level, our focus and approach is on following teacher direction. The language we will be introducing to students is  “Stop, Look, and Listen.” When a teacher uses this prompt it is a signal to students that everyone needs to follow the directions that are given at that moment.

In this learning exercise, we will not be discussing specific scenarios but only what we would do if something unexpected were to happen in our school. I will send a reminder to families a day or two before the first learning exercise on January 23rd.  As Dr. Dolloff shared, this work will continue to evolve and I will continue to communicate with you throughout the process.  If you have any questions, please reach out to me directly.

Lost and Found

We currently have a number of items in our Lost and Found. Please be sure to write your child’s name inside jackets, hats, mittens, boots, water bottles, and snow pants. This helps us to get items returned to their owners much faster. Unclaimed items with no names in them eventually get donated to Good Will. Thanks in advance for your help!

Message from Mrs. Kenlan, Rowe School Music teacher

Save the Date!

The First Grade Rowe School Rowe Show is on Wednesday, May 17th at 6:30!

We are very excited to be back to a live, in-person Rowe Show for first grade this spring!  We will be having the performance in the YPAC at the high school.  To complete the art evening, the Rowe Art Show will be set up in the lobby to view before the performance. We are so excited to share the wonderful talent of the students at Rowe School.  Please mark your calendars!

The Rowe Show has historically been designed for first graders and is the first live performance that students experience in their school years in Yarmouth. We do not begin live performances until first grade.

More details will be sent as the date gets closer, but please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. <jessica_kenlan@yarmouthschools.org>

Public Pre-K at the Rowe School

Yarmouth School Department believes that providing children with a Pre-Kindergarten (Pre K) experience facilitates their success by nurturing academic, social, and emotional development. The curriculum is intended to actively engage students in their learning, and provide regular opportunities for hands-on activities and outdoor experiences. We believe that offering public Pre-K provides all students and families with the opportunity to equitably access high-quality, early childhood education.

To be eligible, students must be four years old by October 15, 2023. Transportation will be available for all interested students.

Programming will be part time (half day) Monday-Friday during either the morning or afternoon.
